Thanks for visiting our page! We are glad that you are interested in learning more about Garden 1. Located on the western edge of the Butterly Garden complex, you will find a wide diversity of plants and wildlife. Many of the plants in our garden embrace the color orange. This is mainly because of our early benefactors, Patti Bloom and (her late husband), Pete Bloom, who both love that color and bought us many varieties! We also have a sidewalk bench donated by them.
I became the leader of Garden 1 in 2017, after being the leader in Garden 3. I was excited to get started in #1, since that was the first garden that was started, and those people put their heart and soul into it. It was much smaller than it is now, but just kept expanding somehow! Dolores Damien-Szafran was my first helper, and then Terry Galloway came along in 2018 to replace her. Terry and her husband designed the garden as it is now. Then we were able to procure Amy Swanson, who walked into the garden during Covid and asked if she could help! More to come about each one of their strengths and how lucky I am to have them on the team.
We try to plant most perennials, but sometimes we can’t help but put in some annuals! Our priority now is to put as many native plants in as possible, on both sides of the sidewalk.
Nina Iraggi (Leader)
