Trips and Tours

The Trips and Tours Committee of the VillageWalk Garden Club researches and reviews tour options of local and regional venues to provide value-added experiences to our members at affordable prices.

The Trips and Tours committee currently has six members who meet in person monthly from December through April and who touch base May through November by email or Zoom calls.

The committee develops a list of places of interest for the next year, usually in late February or March, and the committee members pick one or two places to research. Once the details are known, we choose the most interesting and feasible choices and plan the outings. We have an annual budget to subsidize transportation and/or the cost of trips to members. This has made it possible to offer trips to Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach and Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens in Miami.

Past memorable outings include Echo Farms, Everglades Wonder Gardens, Conservancy of SWFL, Rookery Bay, Naples Zoo, and Shangri-La Organic Gardens, to name a few.

Marie Selby Botanical Garden Trip: January 25, 2024

On a sunny day in late January (25), 10 adventurous Garden Club members boarded a bus to be taken to Marie Selby Gardens in downtown Sarasota (about an hour and a half away).  Once we arrived, we met our tour guide, David Berry.   David began our two hour tour with the history of the gardens and the Selbys.  David was very knowledgeable in both areas.  Most of Selby Gardens has rich lush landscape and we were treated to shade most of the time.  The views of Sarasota Bay enhanced our learning experience of the area.  Of special interest on the tour: a bonsai exhibit, a host of various orchids, hanging baskets, and a curious bark of the Zombie tree.  Our final stop was at the Butterfly Gardens.  VW Butterfly Gardens have them beat.  After the tour, we had time to enjoy more of the area.  Some of the group took lunch at the Selby Gardens Cafe, while others wandered off to enjoy sitting by the Bay or visit the Gift Shop All enjoyed a beautiful day in the Gardens!
